arctic Influence of internal variability on Arctic sea-ice trends The human-induced loss of Arctic sea ice over the past decades has not been uniform, with a high rate from 2001-2007 and a near-zero trend from 2007-2013. However, analyzing short-term trends can be misleading since internal climate variability may mask or enhance long-term trends. This needs to be taken into account for understanding observations and model projections. Read the commentary
high impact events Resilience to extreme weather Reducing the impacts of extreme weather today and in the future are key issues, which are addressed in this report by the Royal Society. Focusing on floods, droughts and heatwaves, it compares available options for risk reduction and includes research recommendations that aim at building resilience on a global level. Read the report
Coping with extreme weather events The European Commission’s Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS) has compiled information on a range of research efforts directed at extreme weather, specifically improving the capacity of identification and monitoring as well as coping with extreme events. This includes studies on Earth’s magnetic field and the role of social media. See the research
sea level NASA: Latest measurements at about 60mm Global mean sea level has risen by 60.12mm since 1993 according to NASA’s satellite measurements. This gives an annual rise of 3.18mm. The other data source are coastal tide gauge records, which have measured the sea level change since 1870. See the data
hydrological cycles Heavy precipitation in a changing climate While heavy precipitation events lasting for full days are likely to increase in the future, recent studies put forward that subdaily events may increase at twice their rate. This study from ETH Zurich, Switzerland employed a convection-resolving model for the Alps and surrounding regions and found a decrease of mean summer rainfall, along with an intensification of both extreme day-long and hour-long precipitation events.
