Dear ECRA fellows and friends,

we hope you enjoyed the summer season and are now well prepared for an exciting autumn.

The second edition of the ECRA newsletter informs you about recent highlights in climate research, latest news from the European stage, possibilities for funding, as well as on a number of interesting upcoming events and workshops.

Happy reading and kind regards from Brussels,

Andreas Krell and Uta Klönne

Arctic Resilience Interim Report 2013 released
The report, led by the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University, considers how changes in climate, ecosystems, economics, and society interact. In addition to the full report, a summary for policymakers is available.

Vast costs of Arctic change
Methane released by melting permafrost will have global impacts that must be better modelled, say scientists from Erasmus University Rotterdam and University of Cambridge in a recent comment in Nature.

Important role for ocean warming and increased ice-shelf melt in Antarctic sea-ice expansion
Unlike in the Arctic, Antarctic sea-ice has expanded. Whereas this has previously been attributed to dynamical atmospheric changes that induce atmospheric cooling, scientists from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) show that accelerated basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves is likely to have contributed significantly to sea-ice expansion.

EURO-CORDEX: new high-resolution climate change projections for European impact research
Scientists at the Climate Service Center (CSC) and Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPIM), Germany and others completed the first set of simulations with a horizontal resolution of 12.5 km for the new emission scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 with more simulations expected to follow. The EURO-CORDEX ensemble results have been compared to the SRES A1B simulation results achieved within the ENSEMBLES project: they differ in regional details.

Observed mean sea level changes around the North Sea coastline from 1800 to present assessed

In a recent study, Scientists from the University of Siegen, Germany, and others analysed long records of up to 200 years from 30 tide gauge sites. They calculated relative sea level trends, examined the inter-annual and decadal variations, estimated regional geocentric sea level rise throughout the 20th century and assessed the evidence for regional acceleration of sea-level rise.

The North Atlantic Ocean drives the weather
Scientists from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russia, GEOMAR, Germany, Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Norway, and others, recently proved what Jacob Bjerknes, the father of modern weather forecasting, suggested as early as 1967: that the North Atlantic controls the surface heat flux over Europe on multidecadal timescales.

Bayesian assessment of horizontal resolution in a nested-domain WRF simulation

With the need for high-resolution data and producing it using a limited area model comes the constraint of limited computing resources. Scientists at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Norway and others now put forward an alternative approach to analysing output from limited area models based on Bayesian probability.

Commission invests EUR 281.4 million in new environment and climate projects

The European Commission has approved funding for 248 new projects under the LIFE+ programme. The projects cover actions in the fields of nature conservation, climate change, environmental policy and information and communication on environmental issues across all Member States. Overall, they represent a total investment of some EUR 556.4 million, of which the EU will provide EUR 281.4 million.

Wuppertal Institute recommends paradigm shift in international climate policy

In their contribution to the recently completed “Consultation on the 2015 International Climate Change Agreement: Shaping international climate policy beyond 2020” by the European Commission, the Wuppertal Institute suggests that states should reconsider the widely accepted assumption that there is a conflict of aims between climate mitigation and economic welfare.

Economics of Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation | 7-11 October | Copenhagen/Lyngby, Denmark

The Centre for Regional Change in the Earth System (CRES) in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark, and the BC3 Basque Centre for Climate Change, Spain invites doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers with a background in science or engineering. The aim of the course is to teach basic and advanced economic concepts to non-economists in relation to economic assessment of climate change risks and adaptation costs.
Application deadline 9 September 2013!

Joint ECRA / CEN Workshop on High-end scenarios of regional sea level changes and their uncertainties | 20-22 November 2013 | Hamburg, Germany
The aims of the workshop are, among others, to review regional sea level projections simulated for high-end climate change scenarios as they result from CMIP5 and other computations, discuss implications for a range of regional sea level scenarios, analyze in depth inherent uncertainties of and consistencies among existing estimates and to develop a strategy as to how to further improve regional sea level projections.
